MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING PLACES THIRD AT PATRIOT INVITATIONAL; WOMEN BATTLE BACK TO FINISH FOURTH

Ryan Karrer set a meet record in winning the 1650 freestyle

The UMBC men’s swimming and diving team held on to third place with 674 points, while the Retriever women battled back to climb one spot and finish fourth with 372 points at the conclusion of the George Mason Patriot Invitational. Yale claimed the title on the men’s side, edging Duke, 797.5 to 760.5, while the Blue Devil women held off Yale, 863-726.

 

On the men’s side, UMBC was paced by junior Geza Szabo, who took gold in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.68 and sophomore Ryan Karrer, who captured the 1650 freestyle in a meet record time of 15:43.46.   The Retrievers also generated several points in the 200 breaststroke, as junior Ian Carey (2:07.06), freshman Karn Yisomruay, senior Aaron Schenker, and freshman Dominic Lee finished second, third, fourth, and eighth, respectively, in that event.

 

Other top finishers on the day included senior Jakub Sroczynski, who took third in the 200 backstroke (1:50.95), junior Adam Blais, who took sixth in the 100 freestyle, and sophomore Tim Conway, who finished eighth in the same event. In men’s diving, sophomore Jeff Salgado placed fifth in the 3-meter event, while teammate Tim Ward was right behind with a sixth-place finish.

 

On the women’s side, UMBC generated several points in the 200 backstroke, as junior Amber Harris finished fourth with a time of 2:04.55, while freshman Rachel Lesslie was right behind at 2:04.93, for fifth place. The Retrievers also received a strong performance from senior Lindsey Prather, who took sixth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.46, and sophomore diver Katie Spohnholz, who finished eighth in the 1-meter event.

 

The UMBC teams will enjoy a long break from competition, and will return to action on January 7, 2005, when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the Howard Sharks.
