11/3/2001
Baltimore, MD-The streak has ended. For the first time in 15 years, the UMBC men's swimming and diving team beat their cross-town rival Navy today at the UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever women were not as lucky, however, as they fell to the Midshipmen despite freshman Lindsay Prather setting a new UMBC record in the 200-yard breaststroke. South Carolina transfer Josh Farley paced the men's squad with three individual wins in the 1000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Senior co-captain Mehdi Addadi captured two races, including the 50-yard freestyle in which he started a full second slower than his opponents. His other victory came in the 200-yard butterfly. Fellow senior Evan Patrick won the 200-yard freestyle and sophomore Brad Green took first in the 100 free. The Retriever 400 medley relay team of sophomore Ramon James, sophomore Jon Armitage, Addadi and Patrick was victorious as well.On the women's side, Prather swam her way to her second UMBC record in just her second collegiate meet. Her time of 2:19.82 in the 200 breast eclipsed the old record by nearly two seconds. Besides her record, she also won the 200-yard IM and the 100 breast. Sophomore Astrid Sperling won two races, both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Holly Wittsack, who won the 200 fly, and freshman Jessica Prosen, who captured the 1000 free, were UMBC's other race winners on the day.Overall, the Retriever men are 1-0 while the women fall to 0-2.ResultsMen400 Medley Relay- James, Armitage, Addadi, Patrick-3:30.621000 Free- Josh Farley- 9:42.01200 Free- Evan Patrick- 1:43.6050 Free- Mehdi Addadi- 22.14200 IM- Josh Farley- 1:57.06200 Butterfly- Mehdi Addadi- 1:55.91100 Free- Brad Green- 47.89500 Free- Josh Farley- 4:43.42Women200 Medley Relay- Sperling, Prather, Wittsack, Lochte- 1:51.021000 Free- Jessica Prosen- 10:37.67100 Back- Astrid Sperling- 1:00.02100 Breast- Lindsay Prather- 1:05.63200 Butterfly- Holly Wittsack- 2:08.47200 Back- Astrid Sperling- 2:07.13200 Breast- Lindsay Prather- 2:19.82 *new UMBC record200 IM- Lindsay Prather- 2:10.26
