UMBC SWIMMING & DIVING TEAMS SWEEP ST. FRANCIS (NY) AND HOWARD

    Baltimore, Md.Both UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams improved to 10-1 on the season, as the Retrievers defeated both St. Francis (NY) and Howard in a tri-meet on Senior Day this afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever men’s team outscored St. Francis by a score of 65-38, and Howard with a final of 67-26. On the women’s side, UMBC defeated St. Francis, 63-35, and Howard, 67-31.

     

    The Terriers and Sharks split their meet, with Howard taking the men’s side, 53-43, and St. Francis edging out the Sharks on the women’s side, 51-47.

     

    UMBC dominated the meet, as the men captured first place in twelve of thirteen events, while the women took ten of thirteen. The Retriever men were led by senior Jon Gdowik, who won both the 1-m (258.85) and 3-m (271.80) diving events. Other individual winners included Carlos Canepa in the 200 freestyle, Brad Green in the 100 backstroke, and Josh Farley in the 500 free. All three were participating in their last home meet this afternoon.

     

    On the women’s side, UMBC received a strong performance from freshman diver Katie Spohnholz, who won the 1-m (218.30) and 3-m (212.55). Senior Katrin Harrsen also had a great day, winning the 1000 free in her last meet at UMBC.

     

    The Retrievers return to action on Saturday, January 31, when they travel to Marist for a 12 p.m. meet.
