MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING HANDS TOWSON THEIR FIRST LOSS, 154-73; RETRIEVER WOMEN TOP TIGERS, 147-88

    Baltimore, MD – UMBC (3-1) handed the Towson (5-1) men’s swimming and diving team its first loss of the season as the Retrievers won 11 of 13 events en route to a 154-73 victory this afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium. The Retriever women remain undefeated at 4-0, as they completed the Tiger sweep by defeating Towson (3-3), 147-88.

     

    On the men’s side, UMBC was led by seniors Carlos Canepa (Lima, Peru/Santa Maria) and Brad Green (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College), and junior Jakub Sroczynski (Zielona Gora, Poland/VII Lo). Canepa finished first in both distance freestyle events, while Green took first in both sprint free events, and Sroczynski came in first in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke. All three were also a part of the 400 freestyle relay team that narrowly defeated Towson by just .38 seconds. The Tigers two individual winners were Aaron Krause, who won the 200 IM and Frank Trionfo, who finished first in the 200 breaststroke.

     

    For the women, UMBC was paced by senior Astrid Sperling (Halle, Germany/Halle) and freshman Agnieska Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland/Lo VI Zielona Gora). Sperling won both the 200 IM and 500 free, while Stanislawska came in first in the 200 free and 200 back events. Junior Peggy Preston (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) also added points on the boards for UMBC, winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The Towson women were led by junior Jen Irby, who took first place in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

     

    The UMBC men look to defend their title next Friday, November 21, when both Retriever teams travel to Fairfax, VA to participate in the George Mason Invitational.
