UMBC MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING INCHES PAST AMERICAN, 126-102; RETRIEVER WOMEN DOMINATE OVER EAGLES, 130-81

Baltimore, MD – The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened the season with a dual meet victory over American, with the Retrievers winning 126-102 on the men’s side, and 130-81 for the women, this afternoon at the UMBC Natatorium.

 

For the men, the Retrievers were paced by junior Jakub Sroczynski (Zielona Gora, Poland/VII Lo), senior captain Brad Green (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle College), and senior diver Jon Gdowik (West Chester, Pa./Henderson). Sroczynski captured first in both the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke, while Green won the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Both were also a part of the 400 freestyle relay team that came in first place. Gdowik added points for UMBC by winning both the 1M and 3M diving events. American was led by senior captain Ethan Bassett, who won the 1000 and 500 freestyle, and senior Dominick Szabo, who set a new pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.46.

 

On the women’s side, senior Astrid Sperling (Halle, Germany/Halle), sophomore Elyse Gibson (Nova Scotia, Canada) and freshman Katie Spohnholz (Anchorage, Alaska/ Robert Service) each won two events for the Retrievers, helping UMBC to place first in 11 of the 13 events. Sperling came in first in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle, while Gibson won the 50 and 100 free, and Spohnholz dominated on the boards, winning the 1M and 3M events. The Eagles were paced by senior captain Jessica Lidstrom, who won the 200 freestyle, and junior Cameron Miller, who took first in the 1000 freestyle.

 

The Retrievers return to action next Saturday, November 1, when they host the Navy men at 10 a.m., and the Navy women at 1 p.m.
