4/22/2003

Dover, DE - UMBC (28-17) extended its win streak to nine with a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State (20-22) by scores of 6-3 and 8-6. With the Retriever win in game one, Head Coach Joe French reached a milestone of 500 combined career wins (softball and basketball).

For the first game, Delaware State held a 3-2 lead after four innings, but Lauren Hebb hit a solo hom run in the fifth to tie the game. It was not until the top of the seventh that UMBC would take the lead for good on RBI's from Kristie Pickeral, Abbie Kahn, and Christy Sheppard. Starter Lauren Nicholson improved to 12-7 on the season with the victory as she went the distance, allowing just three runs on four hits.

In game two, the Retrievers jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and did not look back as they took the win from the Hornets, 8-6. UMBC was led by Pickeral, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI's, including a two-run homer in the first frame. Pitcher Amy Sadowl improved to 13-5 with the win.
