UMBC SOFTBALL EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO SEVEN WITH SWEEP OF FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON
4/19/2003
Baltimore, MD –
In game one, FDU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when freshman Molly Perez reached on an error by Retriever second baseman Christy Sheppard, and later scored on a two-out single by junior Serena Larsen. UMBC answered with three runs of their own in the bottom frame as junior Lauren Hebb doubled to left center, scoring sophomore Christina French and senior Kristen Rynning. Later in the same inning, sophomore Kristie Pickeral would plate Hebb with a single past the Knights’ shortstop. The Retrievers added three more runs in the fifth to secure the 6-3 victory. For the game, Hebb led UMBC, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI’s. Freshman starter Amy Sadowl earned her twelfth win of the season as she allowed just three runs on ten hits in seven innings of work.
In the second game, Retriever pitcher Lauren Nicholson scattered four hits in seven innings, while walking two and striking out three to lead UMBC in the shutout victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. The Retrievers scored all they would need in the first when Hebb led off with a walk and later scored on another RBI-single by Pickeral. Offensively, UMBC was led by Rynning, who went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Pickeral, who went 3-for-3 while driving in four.
Rynning was among the four seniors recognized at today’s doubleheader. She was joined by Sheppard, and senior co-captains Abbie Kahn and Lisa Boone.
UMBC returns to action on April 23 when they host Mount St. Mary’s for a conference doubleheader at 2pm.
