UMBC SOFTBALL SWEEPS QUINNIPIAC

    Hamden, Conn. - The Quinnipiac softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Northeast conference rival UMBC, 6-1, 6-4, respectively Saturday afternoon at the Quinnipiac Athletic Complex. With the losses, the Bobcats move to 17-10, and 3-4 in the NEC, while the Retrievers improve to 19-15-1, and 5-1 in the NEC.

    Quinnipiac got on the board first in the fifth inning of the opening game with a run from Elizabeth Moriarty (Hillsborough, N.J.). The Retrievers answered just their next at bat. The team scored three runs on two hits and three Bobcat errors. Lauren Hebb and Christy Sheppard recorded the hits.

    Adding to its lead, UMBC scored three mores runs in the seventh to close out the scoring at six.

    Pitching a complete game, Retriever Amy Sadowl gave up three hits, walked one and struck out none for the win.

    On the mound for the Bobcats and receiving the loss was Melissa Reynolds (9-2). Reynolds stood 6.1 innings, struck out three, walked two and scattered six hits.

    Elizabeth Euley led the team in a seventh inning rally with a lead-off homerun to end the second game. The team was down three runs entering the inning. With the tying run on first, the Bobcats, however were unable to claim a victory and lost 6-4.

    Scoring one run in the first from a homer by Sarah Collins (Bedford, Mass.), UMBC tallied four of its own in the top of the second. The Retrievers managed only two hits, but capitalized on three Quinnipiac errors.

    Going the distance for the Retrievers was Lauren Nicholson. Nicholson allowed 11 hits, walked none and struck out four Bobcats.
