TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore righthander JESSICA WIDES (Damascus H.S./Damascus, Md.) pitched her third shutout of the season and allowed just one hit as Towson University (12-14-1) snapped its four-game losing streak with a 2-0 non-conference victory over UMBC (17-16-1) at the Tigers’ Towson Center Field.
Wides, now 8-6 on the season, allowed only base runner as freshman first baseman LARA SEAMON(Richfield Springs, N.Y.) singled to rightfield with two outs in the second inning. Wides didn’t allow any walks and had eight strikeouts. She has now pitched a no-hitter, a one-hitter and a two-hitter in the last two weeks.
The Tigers, who managed just four hits of freshman righthander LAUREN NICHOLSON (Audubon, N.J.), scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning.
In the fourth inning, freshman rightfielder JILLIAN FRASER (Livermore H.S./Livermore, Cal.) led off with an infield single. Sophomore first baseman SAM SCHAUKOWITCH (St. Ignatius H.S./San Bruno, Cal.) tried to bunt Fraser to second base. However, the UMBC infield committed two errors on the play, allowing Fraser to score from first base as Schaukowitch ended up on third base. One out later, freshman third baseman KEELY WALSH(Livermore H.S./Livermore, Cal.) singled to left field, scoring Schaukowitch with the second run of the inning.
The Tigers threatened to add more runs in the fifth inning when they had runners on second and third base with one out but Nicholson pitched out of the jam. In the sixth inning, Towson loaded the bases with one out before sophomore left fielder JENNY EDWARDS (Juanita H.S./Kirkland, Wash.) ended the rally by lining into a double play.
Walsh led the Tigers by collecting two base hits.
Nicholson allowed four hits and two unearned runs while walking no one and striking out three. However, UMBC made five errors in the game.
