SOFTBALL SWEEPS WAGNER, 4-2 & 9-1

Staten Island, NY – (April 6, 2003) UMBC took both games of a double header from the Wagner college softball team winning 4-2 and 9-1 earlier this afternoon at the Lower Athletic Field in Staten Island, NY

In the first game the Retrievers used a triple and a double to stake an earlier 1-0 in the top of the first. The scored remained 1-0 until the last of the fifth when junior Jessica Van Mahen (Staten Island, NY) knocked in sophomore Megan Quinn (Montgomery, NY) on a sacrifice fly to even the game at 1-1. Quinn pinch ran for junior Marie Bianca (Staten Island, NY) who doubled to left center.

After senior pitcher Krystle Petty (Edison , NJ) intentionally walked a batter to load the bases with one out in the sixth inning, Sarah Crowell bloopped a single down the right field line to clear the base and give UMBC a 4-1 advantage.

Senior Lynn Shortway (Hawthrone, NJ) would double in a run for Wagner in the bottom of the sixth, but a ground out would end the Seahawks threat.

Petty took the loss for Wagner falling to 5-6 on the season , while Lauren Nicholson now stands at 6-6 with the win.

Game two saw more offense from UMBC as the Retrievers jumped ahead 5-0 in the fourth before Wagner ended the shut out with a run in the last of the fifth. UMBC then added three more in the sixth on a home run and another in the seventh for the final out come.

Sophomore Kate Refsynder (Prospect Park, PA) was on the losing end for Wagner, while Amy Sadowl earn the victory holding the Seahawks to just three hits in the game.

The sweep leaves Wagner at 6-15 over all and 3-3 in the Northeast Conference (NEC). UMBC improved to 16-14-1 on the year and 2-0-1 in the league.
