UMBC CLAIMS ELON PHOENIX SOFTBALL CLASSIC CROWN
BURLINGTON, NC – Tournament MVP Abbie Kahn drove in the game-winning run with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning as UMBC overcame James Madison 6-5 in the championship game of the 2003 Phoenix Classic softball tournament Saturday afternoon at Burlington City Park.
UMBC (6-5 overall, 4-1 in the tournament) exploded for four runs in the third inning to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 advantage entering the final inning. James Madison (5-7, 4-2) eventually rallied by scoring four times in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 edge.
In the bottom half of the frame, Donnell Sousley’s two-out RBI double plated Lauren Hebb, who led the inning off with a double. Hebb scored the tying run, setting up Kahn’s heroics.
