Softball Hosts UMBC Spring Classic; Schedule Updated

BALTIMORE – Softball co-hosts its final regular season tournament with Coppin State, the UMBC Spring Classic, March 14-16, at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The tournament features nine teams; UMBC, Coppin State, Georgetown, Hampton, La Salle, Morgan State, Princeton, Sacred Heart and Siena. The schedule has been updated as of Thursday, March 15.
Scouting the Retrievers (5-15): UMBC fell for the third straight game on Wednesday against Mount St. Mary’s. The Retrievers will look to sophomore Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) to get the bats going this weekend. Hall leads the team with five home runs and 25 RBI on the season. Freshman Bridget O’Malley (Brooklyn, Md./Seton Keough) is second on the team in on-base percentage (.507) and has stolen a team-best nine bases. In the circle, Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) will have to continue to pilot UMBC’s pitching staff. The senior has a team-low 2.60 ERA and has two complete game shutouts in six starts.
Scouting the Eagles (5-5): Coppin State was defeated in all four games at the Dawg Pound Invitational over the weekend. The Eagles have three players batting over .400, including a team-best .438 average from Cheyenne Gerber. Danielle Smith has scored 14 runs for Coppin State and has five RBI. In the circle, Melli Richardson has recorded three victories in seven appearances.
Scouting the Hoyas (4-18): Georgetown went 1-5 at the Coastal Carolina Tournament over the weekend and was edged 3-1 in eight innings in Wednesday’s contest against Drexel. Elyse Graziano is batting a team-best .349, with four RBI.
Scouting the Pirates (11-16): Hampton has dropped five-straight coming into the weekend’s tournament, falling in a pair of doubleheaders to Maryland and Towson. Maragaret Wilkins is one of three players to start all 27 games and is batting a team-best .411 on the season. She has a team-best eight extra base hits and ranks second on the team with 16 RBI. Adrianna Scott leads the squad with three home runs and 18 RBI. Jailynn Jackson has accounted for eight of the team’s 11 victories in the circle and has registered 98 strikeouts on the season.
Scouting the Explorers (5-3): La Salle has not played since opening its season in Orlando March 2-6. The Explorers won a pair of games to end the trip, defeating Grambling and Detroit Mercy 6-0.
Scouting the Bears (1-14): Morgan State lost both contests over the weekend at the Towson Tournament and have lost seven in a row overall.
Scouting the Tigers (6-3): Princeton won three of four at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational over the weekend. The Tigers have two players batting over .500 for the season in Kayla Bose (.529) and Alyssa Schmidt (.514). The duo has combined for seven doubles and 10 RBI. Sarah McGown has registered a .625 on-base percentage, while Candy Button has driven in a team-best eight runs. In the circle, Shanna Christian is holding batters to a .164 batting average and has a 1.79 ERA.
Scouting the Pioneers (5-8): Sacred Heart split a pair of contests over the weekend at the Rebel Spring Games, falling 12-0 to South Dakota and defeating Akron 3-1 in eight innings. Pitcher Nicole Sidor earned Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week honors for her performances last week. The senior pitched 42 innings and struck out 39 batters, en route to a 3-3 week. Sidor has a 1.06 ERA on the season and also leads the team from the dish, batting a team-best .415. Annie Dreher leads the team with 10 RBI.
Scouting the Saints (0-7): Siena dropped its first seven contests of the 2013 campaign and enter the weekend seeking its first victory of the season. Shannon Jones is batting a team-best .455 and has tabbed a .538 on-base percentage, while Chelsea Stout has driven in three runs and is second on the team in batting average (.364). Alyssa Lancaster has made five appearances in the circle and has tossed 21.2 innings.
