SOFTBALL DROPS A PAIR AT UNC WILMINGTON TOURNAMENT

 UNCW defeated UMBC in the semifinals, rallying from a 5-0 deficit for an 11-6 win. Gostyla picked up the win in relief of starter Amanda Wilson.

     The Retrievers led, 5-0, entering the bottom of the third, but the Seahawks answered with five runs to tie the game. Right fielder Tiffany Lindemann’s grand slam to center field highlighted the inning.

     The Seahawks broke open the game with a run in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth for an 11-5 lead. Hilliard went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in. First baseman Christine Freaney had three hits to lead the UNCW lineup.

     Shortstop Lisa Boone, center fielder Crystal Beveridge and second baseman Christy Shepard topped UMBC with two hits apiece. First baseman Lauren Hebb led off the game with a home run for UMBC.

UMBC opened the day with a 4-0 loss to Coastal Carolina.  The Chanticleers scored three unearned runs off of Lauren Nicholson, who took the defeat.  Lisa Boone had two of UMBC's three hits.
