UMBC Softball Unveils 2013 Schedule
BALTIMORE – UMBC head softball coach Joe French announced the Retrievers’ 2013 schedule, which features five tournaments, including three tournaments hosted by UMBC throughout the month of March.
UMBC will open the season with back-to-back tournaments, starting with five games at the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic II, hosted by Southeast Louisiana Feb. 15-17, followed by a single game against Mount St. Mary’s at the UMBC Softball Stadium on Feb. 19. The Retrievers jump back on the road for five games at the UNC Wilmington Tournament Feb. 22-24, with a pair of matchups against the host Seahawks and Morehead State, as well as a single game against Gardner Webb.
The black and gold host Towson for a single game on Feb. 27, before hosting three straight tournaments. The UMBC Retriever Classic, running March 1-3, will feature Coppin State, Farleigh Dickinson, St. Peter’s, St. Francis (Pa.) and Morgan State. The Retrievers travel to George Washington for a midweek game, before the Colonials join Coppin State, Princeton, Seton Hall, Mount St. Mary’s, Howard, Rhode Island and Marist take part in the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational March 8-10.
The Retrievers will host their final tournament of the season, the UMBC Spring Classic, March 15-17, with Coppin State, Sacred Heart, Morgan State, Georgetown, Siena, La Salle, Mount St. Mary’s, Hampton and Princeton set to participate.
“We wanted to play a tournament in the south, against teams that we haven’t faced before, so we picked the tournament in Louisiana,” French said. “We are also getting to play some different teams in the UNC-Wilmington Tournament. At the same time, we wanted to keep our local rivalry games during the week, in addition to our three usual UMBC tournaments – which feature a variety of teams from different leagues.”
UMBC takes on George Mason in a midweek single game on March 20, before beginning its America East slate in a three-game series against Maine (March 23-24). The Retrievers travel to St. Peter’s for a doubleheader (March 27), followed by a three-game series at Stony Brook (March 30-31) and a single game at Georgetown (April 2).
The black and gold host Binghamton for three games April 6-7 and makes trips to defending America East champion Boston University (April 13-14) and Albany (April 20-21).
UMBC sandwiches its final league series against Hartford (April 27-28) with a double-header at La Salle (April 23) and a three-game series during its conference bye week at Niagara (May 4-5).
