Softball Drops a Pair to Boston U. on Senior Day
Jess Warner went 4-for-7 in two games on Sunday
BALTIMORE – With six seniors playing for the final time at their home stadium, the UMBC softball team (19-31, 1-17 AE) lost both games of a season ending doubleheader against America East rival Boston University (37-14, 15-3 AE), Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. After the second game of yesterday’s doubleheader was moved to Sunday due to rain, the Terries took game one, 9-4, and then came back and swept the Retrievers with a 10-1 win in game two to clinch the conference regular season championship.
Sophomore Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 4-for-7 in the two games against BU, hitting her team-best 11th homerun of the year in game one.
Erin Schuppert (7-6) earned the win in game one for the Terriers despite giving up four runs on two hits and only making it through four innings. Whitney Tuthill once again came into the game in relief and for the second straight day shut down the Retrievers to pick up her second save of the year.
Senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) took the loss for the Retrievers after yielding seven runs on seven hits over two innings of work. Junior Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./North East) came in and pitched five innings for UMBC, surrendering two runs but striking out two batters and forcing 13 groundouts.
The visitors got going quickly in the opening game, plating five runs as the first six batters all reached base in the first inning. Ferguson did get out of a jam in the inning, preventing further damage by stranding two runners on base. BU tacked on two more runs in the top of the second though to push its lead to 7-0.
UMBC struck back in the bottom half of inning as senior Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led off with a double to left and came in to score on a fielder’s choice.
Brown then sent Boston U. down in order in the top of the third and the Retrievers took advantage, plating three runs in the bottom half of the frame to cut the gap to three, 7-4. Warner led off the inning with a homer to left and two batters later freshman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) matched her teammate with her own round-tripper. Ferguson then singled and scored as Yannone hit her second double of the day.
The Terriers stunted the rally in the top of the fourth with a single run and added another in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Game two began as a pitchers’ dual as BU led only 2-0 after four innings. In the fifth, however, the Terriers put five on the board and added three more in the sixth to force the shorten game.
Hall went 2-for-3 for the Retrievers lining her team-leading 15th double of the season to start off the fifth inning.
Freshman Miranda Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) (3-5) was charged with the loss after giving up five earned runs in 4.1 innings in the circle.
Holli Floetker (17-3) earned her 17th win of the season after surrendering just one run while scattering five hits in a five inning outing for BU.
