Hall Named America East Rookie of the Week; Softball Hosts Georgetown on Tuesday
Taylor Hall was named the America East Rookie of the Week
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Ė UMBC Softball freshman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) has been named the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced on Monday. The rookie also received this honor back on Feb. 27 and becomes the first multiple Rookie of the Week winner for the Retrievers since 2007 when Amanda Fefel won the award twice.
In six non-conference games this past week, Hall hit .500 (9-for-18) with two doubles and five RBIs. Hall connected for at least one hit in each game and is currently on a career-best six game hitting streak.
In UMBCís 12-5 win over Howard on Thursday, the freshman went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with an RBI single in the first and a two-RBI double in the third.
For the season, Hall is second on the team with a .358 average (31-for-90) and 16 RBIs. She has also hit two homeruns this year and scored 16 runs for the Retrievers.
Coming off of a dramatic walk-off win over St. Peterís on Sunday, the UMBC softball team looks to continue the momentum when the Retrievers host Georgetown on Tuesday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
Junior Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) will take the ball for the Retrievers on Tuesday, coming off of a two-win weekend against St. Peterís. The right-hander is now 6-5 this season and has won her past three decisions.
Scouting the Retrievers
UMBC sits at 17-15 this season after taking three out of four games from St. Peterís this weekend. On Saturday, the Retrievers swept the doubleheader with the Peahens, winning the first game, 10-3, before claiming the second game, 7-2. On Sunday, UMBC dropped the first game, 8-3, but rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to steal the finale, 4-3.
Sophomore Jessica Warner has been the Retrieversí engine this season with a team-best .384 average (38-for-99) to go along with 21 RBIs and 23 runs scored. The third baseman also leads the America East with eight homeruns in 2012.
Classmate Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) had a very strong March for UMBC, leading the club with a .388 average (26-for-67) to go along with two homeruns and 14 RBIs.
Scouting the Hoyas
Georgetown comes to Baltimore at 14-20 after dropping all three games of a weekend series at Rutgers. In the opener, the Hoyas led 2-0 heading into the sixth inning, but the Scarlet Knights rallied for three runs to claim the win, 3-2.
In the next two games, Rutgers shutout Georgetown to sweep the series with 3-0 and 8-0 wins.
Shakire Lowe leads the Hoyas with a .333 average (30-for-90) along with a team-best four homeruns and 20 RBIs. Megan Hyson has also provided some pop for Georgetown with seven extra base hits, four doubles and three homeruns, this season. Hyson also leads the Hoyas with a 2.30 ERA in 58.2 innings of work in 2012.
