Katie Ferguson has won seven of her last eight decisions
BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC softball senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) threw her eighth straight complete game as the Retrievers downed Brown, 7-1, on the final day of the UMBC Spring Classic at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
Ferguson matched a season-high on Sunday, striking out eight batters, to pick up the win for UMBC (10-12). The right-hander has now won seven of her last eight decisions while posting a 1.25 ERA.
Brown’s Sam Brown was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in just over one inning of work.
Freshman Courtney Paone (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) led the Retrievers at the plate, going 3-for-3 and scoring two runs against the Bears. Senior Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) hit two solo homeruns for UMBC, who went 3-2 at the four-day tournament.
After both teams were held scoreless in the first inning, the Retrievers took the initiative in the bottom of the second. Freshman Courtney Reinfeld (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) started the rally with a double to right center, and then advanced to third on a single by Paone. Classmate Kaila Balatgek (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) capped the inning with a three-run homer to left center, bringing home pinch runner Katrina Gaar (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar/Orange Coast CC) and Paone.
UMBC increased the lead the very next inning on Yannone’s first solo shot of the day, this one to left center. In the bottom of the fourth, the Retrievers pushed the lead to six on RBI singles by senior Ashley Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) and sophomore Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton). Yannone then slammed her second homerun of the day in the bottom of the fifth to finish UMBC’s scoring and push the lead to seven.
Brown got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh on a lead off solo homerun by Kat Strobel.
UMBC returns to the diamond on Tuesday when the team travels to Virginia to take on George Mason. First pitch between the Retrievers and Patriots is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
