Courtney Prendergast gave the Rams an early lead in the first inning with a home run to straight-away centerfield. Martinez shrugged it off though and got out of the inning after forcing a ground out to third base. Then, she shut the Rams out in the second and third innings, allowing only one hit in each frame, but she was taken out in the fourth inning after allowing four runs, though only two were earned.
Rhode Island scored four more runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding nine-run advantage.
UMBC got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on Yannone’s solo homerun.
