Softball Hosts Four-Day UMBC Spring Classic Starting Thursday

BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC softball team (7-10) will co-host the UMBC Spring Classic this weekend at the UMBC Softball Stadium, along with Coppin State. Mount St. Mary’s and Siena return to Baltimore for the second straight week after playing in last weekend’s Dawg Pound Invitational. Brown, Georgetown, Rhode Island, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart and St. Francis (Pa.) will also travel to the Charm City for the tournament.

On the Bears: Brown is 1-4 this season after taking one win in five games at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas back in early March. Danielle Palms leads the Bears with a .538 average (7-for-13), while Alyssa Caplan is also batting .500 for the season. Stephanie Thompson has a team-leading five RBI so far.
UMBC vs. Brown All-Time: The Retrievers lead the all-time series with Brown, 8-2, after splitting two games a year ago. The Bears took the opening meeting, 2-1, at the Dawg Pound Invitational, before UMBC bounced back with a 9-8 win in ten innings at the Spring Classic. Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) hit a walk-off, bases loaded double to give the hosts the win.
On the Hoyas: Georgetown is 9-15 for the 2012 campaign after going 1-4 at last weekend’s Florida Gulf Coast Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. The Hoyas are led at the plate by Shakira Lowe who is batting .403 (25-for-62) this season. Lowe also leads the team in RBIs (15) and homeruns (3).
On the Mountaineers: Mount St. Mary’s is 5-14 this season after dropping a doubleheader at George Washington on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. Pitcher Nicole Pagano paces the Mountaineers’ staff with a 4-3 record and 1.96 ERA. At last weekend’s Dawg Pound Invitational she threw a no-hitter.
On the Rams: Rhode Island stands at 4-11 this season after going 1-3 last weekend at the Maryland Wounded Warrior Invitational in College Park, Md. Courtney Prendergast has excelled at the plate, hitting .435 (20-for-46) this season with nine RBIs and three homeruns. Kelly Coker has knocked in 13 runs so far to go along with a .310 average (13-for-42).
UMBC vs. Rhode Island All-Time: The Retrievers lead the all-time series with the Rams, 3-1, after taking last year’s matchup, 3-2, in Baltimore. Trailing, 2-0, UMBC rallied with three runs in the final two innings and took the win on a walk-off single by Angela Yannone in the bottom of the seventh. The teams have never played in Rhode Island, with two of the meetings coming on a neutral field in Orlando, Fla. and the other two in Maryland.
On the Colonials: Robert Morris is 6-11 this season following a winless trip to the Milihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii. Nicole Sleith is 4-6 this season with a team-best 1.83 ERA for the Colonials. Jaci Timko leads the way with 14 hits this season.
On the Pioneers: Sacred Heart is 4-11 on the season after picking up all four wins at the week-long Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. Nicole Sidor has posted a 4-5 record so far this season with a team-leading 1.47 ERA in eight starts this season.
UMBC vs. Sacred Heart All-Time: The Retrievers are 9-4 all-time versus the Pioneers, taking the last five meetings between the two schools. UMBC and Sacred Heart have not met since 2007 however, with UMBC winning that Spring Classic contest, 10-1, in five innings.
On the Saints: Siena is 3-5 in 2012 after yesterday’s doubleheader at UMES was cancelled due to rain. The Saints went 2-2 at last weekend’s Dawg Pound Invitational. Jessica Sandrini leads Siena with a .478 average (11-for-23) to go along with five RBIs and a homerun. Amanda Filippazzo has limited oppnents to a .220 batting average and posts a 1.15 ERA through four starts.
UMBC vs. Siena All-Time: The Retrievers are a perfect 3-0 against the Saints in the all-time series. Last weekend at the Dawg Pound Invitational, UMBC scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a one-run deficit and take the win, 5-2. Senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) went the distance for the Retrievers giving up only two runs on four hits.
On the Red Flash: St. Francis (Pa.) is 6-7 on the year after splitting four games at last weekend’s Florida Gulf Coast Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla. Kaitlin Andler posts a team-best .405 average (15-for-37) with two doubles five RBIs. In the circle, Chelsey Rex leads the Red Flash with a 1.97 ERA in seven starts this season.
