Softball Visits Local Rival Towson on Thursday

BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC softball team travels to local rival Towson to take on the Tigers on Thursday afternoon. The game is a makeup game for a contest that was washed out due to rain last week. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Tigers’ Softball Complex.
Senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) will take to the circle for the Retrievers. The veteran pitcher is 2-4 this season with a 3.78 ERA, but is coming off of a stellar weekend where she threw two complete games, picking up two wins. On Saturday at the UMBC Retriever Classic, Ferguson threw a one-hitter against Niagara, striking out eight Purple Eagle hitters and not allowing a baserunner past first.
UMBC and Towson have met 46 times over the years with the Tigers holding the series lead, 28-18. The two squads met once during the 2011 campaign, with UMBC taking the win, 6-3, at the UMBC Softball Stadium. Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) paced the Retrievers, going 3-for-3, finishing just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, while also driving in three runs.
Reliever Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) pitched three innings and yielded only one run on four hits to pick up the save, and preserve the win for UMBC.
The Black and Gold went 3-1 this past weekend at the UMBC Retriever Classic. On Friday, UMBC defeated Princeton, 7-2, behind a complete game effort from Ferguson. Freshman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) picked up two hits in the victory to pace the Retrievers.
UMBC then began a game with Canisius, however ,the game was suspended in the third inning with the Retrievers leading, 5-0, due to rain. The two squads came back on Saturday and UMBC held off a late rally to pick up its third straight win, claiming a two-run decision, 6-4.
The final day saw UMBC split two games with Niagara and Iona. Ferguson, shut down the Purple Eagles, limiting them to one hits over seven innings to give UMBC a four game winning streak.
In game two against the Gaels, UMBC took a two-run lead in the fourth inning on a three-run homerun by sophomore Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown). Iona came back, however, forcing extra innings and then plating six runs in the extra frame to claim the victory, 10-4.
Through 12 games this season, Warner paces the Retrievers with a .394 average (13-for-33), six extra base hits and six RBI. Hall is not far behind, hitting .378 (14-for-37) with a homerun and four RBI in her first season in Baltimore.
After Thursday’s game, the Retrievers return to campus to host the eight-team Dawg Pound Invitational. During the three-day tournament, games will be split between the UMBC campus and Coppin State. - Hall has picked up at least one hit in eight of her 12 appearances this season.
- Warner went 0-for-1 with two walks against Niagara, breaking her six game hit streak.
- The Retrievers picked up five walks against both Canisius and Niagara, matching a season-high which was set in the second game of the season at Longwood.
