Head Coach Joe French
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC softball team's trip around the beltway to take on local rival Towson on Wednesday afternoon has been reshedulued for next Thurs. March 8, due to rain. First pitch between the Retrievers and Tigers is still scheduled for 2 p.m.
UMBC and Towson have met 46 times through the years, with the Tigers holding a 28-18 series lead. The Retrievers’ win last year broke a three-game win streak by Towson.
UMBC heads into the rivalry game with a 2-6 record, following a third place finish at the Charleston Southern Tournament. The Retrievers dropped all three round robin games before defeating Hampton, 14-9, in Sunday’s consolation game.
Standout freshmen Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) has made a mark so far this season, including going 6-for-12, with three doubles and three RBI at last weekend’s tournament in South Carolina. Her performance earned her the season’s first America East Rookie of the Week honors.
Senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) has also been a key for the Retrievers in the early going, driving in three runs. She led the Retrievers in Sunday’s win over Hampton, going for 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) has also performed well for the Retrievers, picking up 10 hits in 23 at bats (.435) so far. The sophomore leads the team with three extra base hits in 2012.
