Softball Drops Two on Day One of the Charleston Southern Tournament
Angela Yannon went 3-for-4 against Hampton
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UMBC softball team (1-5) dropped its first two games of the Charleston Southern Tournament on Friday at Buccaneer Field. In the first game, the Retrievers fell, 8-0, to Wright State, before being edged, 6-5, by Hampton.
After trailing, 5-1, going into the top of the sixth inning, the Retrievers rallied for four runs, to knot the game at five. The Pirates, however, scored in the bottom of the inning to pick up the win.
Senior Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) led the UMBC attack, going 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the fourth.
Sophomore Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) reached base in each of her four plate appearances. The third baseman picked up two walks to go along with a double and a single.
Senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) took the loss for the Retrievers (0-3) after giving up the run in the bottom half of the sixth.
In the first day of the game, UMBC was shutout for the third time this season, falling to Wright State, 8-0.
Wright State’s Krystian DeWitt threw a seven inning complete game, striking out eight UMBC batters to pick up her first win of the year.
Freshman Miranda Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B Plant) took the first loss of her career after giving up five earned runs in just a one-third of an inning.
The Retrievers continue play at the Charleston Southern Tournament tomorrow, when they take on the host Buccaneers beginning at 11 a.m. The two teams with the best record from the round robin play will then face-off in the championship game at 3 p.m. with the other two squads matching up at 1 p.m.
