Reinfeld Single Gives Softball Walk-off Win Over Seton Hall, 2-1
Ashley Carver score the game-winning run
FARMVILLE, VA. – UMBC softball freshman Courtney Reinfeld (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) singled to left in the bottom of the seventh, driving in senior Ashley Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), to give the Retrievers (1-2) a 2-1 win over Seton Hall on Saturday, day two of the Lancer Lead Off Tournament, at Longwood’s Lancer Field.
The win is the Retrievers’ first of the 2012 season and comes courtesy of Reinfeld’s first career RBI.
UMBC had taken a 1-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning, however, Seton Hall (1-1) tied the game on a solo homerun.
The game was a pitchers’ dual, with both teams combining for only 11 hits.
Junior Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) went the distance for the Retrievers, yielding only five hits and one earned run, while striking out three, to pick up her first win of the season.
After three and a half scoreless innings, UMBC signaled its intent in the bottom half of the fourth. Freshman Kaila Balatgek (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) led off with a double to left, and advanced to third on a single by senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecill CC).
The Retrievers were held at bay momentarily though, as Balatgek was thrown out at home trying to score on flyball to center off the bat of freshman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby).
Senior Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) finally made the break though, doubling to center to bring around Ferguson from second.
The one run lead remained in tact until the seventh when the Pirates knotted the game on the homerun, setting up Reinfeld’s heroics.
The Retriever take the field again this evening when they face St. John’s at 6:15. UMBC then play the Red Storm again tomorrow morning, with the first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
