Stephanie Weigman allowed just one unearned run in the second game against BU.

BOSTON—Freshman shortstop Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 4-for-6 with three extra-base hits and three RBIs to lead the UMBC softball team (19-13, 4-4 AE) to a doubleheader split with two-time defending America East champion Boston University (19-12, 5-3 AE) Saturday afternoon at the BU Softball Field. The Terriers won the first game, 8-2, but the Retrievers took the nightcap, 5-1.

Game 1: Boston U. 8, UMBC 2

BU starter Holli Floetker limited the Retrievers to just four hits in the first game, with both runs coming on Warner’s second-inning home run.

The Terriers scored three runs in the first, but Warner’s fourth homer of the season, a two-run shot to left, pulled UMBC to within one, 3-2. But Boston U. scored an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, then broke it open with four runs in the fifth.

Sophomore Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings of work, while Floetker went the distance and struck out eight in the win.

Game 2: UMBC 5, Boston U. 1

After the Terriers scored an unearned run in the first, the Retrievers rebounded with four runs in the top of the second. Junior catcher Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake), Warner and senior designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led off the inning with three consecutive doubles, accounting for the first two runs, and sophomore right fielder Ashley Scroggin (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) drove in two more with a two-out bases-loaded single that made it 4-1.

The score remained the same until the fifth, when junior first baseman Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) hit a solo home run, her fourth of the season.

Despite getting a hit in six out of seven innings, the Terriers could not manage another run, and UMBC senior right-hander Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve the victory.

Weigman (12-7) allowed just one unearned run on six hits and one walk and struck out five in the complete game win. Erin Schuppert (6-3) took the loss after giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits in seven innings.

The teams meet again Sunday at 12 p.m. in the rubber match of the three-game series.
