Softball to Host UMBC Retriever Classic This Weekend
Julia Culotta is batting .364 with a team-best six RBI so far this season.
BALTIMORE—The UMBC softball team (2-5) will host the UMBC Retriever Classic this weekend at UMBC Softball Stadium. Iona (5-3), Liberty (2-2), Mount St. Mary’s (1-1), Princeton (0-0) and Siena (2-2) will also compete. Full schedule follows below:

Dawg Bites: The Retrievers are 2-5 on the season following Tuesday’s doubleheader split at George Washington. Junior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) and senior Lynn Pronobis (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) are both hitting a team-best .375 (9-for-24) so far this season, while senior Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee) leads UMBC with six RBI. The Retrievers are batting .289 as a team, but their opponents are batting .340. Freshman Kayla Martinez (Odenton, Md./Arundel) leads the Retrievers on the mound with a 2.68 ERA in 15.2 innings of work.
On the Gaels: Iona is 5-3 on the season following a 3-1 weekend at the Spartan Invitational in Norfolk, Va. Erin Kyle is batting a team-best .353 (6-for-17) so far this season, while Alyssa Maiese leads Iona with six RBI and four doubles among her seven hits. Sarah Jackson has posted a 4-0 record and leads the Gaels in the pitching circle with a 1.85 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 30.1 innings.
UMBC vs. Iona All-Time: The Retrievers lead the all-time series against the Gaels, 3-1. The teams last met in 2009 at the Longwood Spring Classic, a 4-3 five-inning win for UMBC in a game that was shortened by rain.
On the Flames: Liberty is 2-2 on the season following the season-opening College of Charleston Cougar Classic. Amber DePasquale is batting a team-best .300 (3-for-10) so far this season, while Jenny Law leads Liberty with four RBI. The Flames are batting just .196 as a team, but have held opponents to a .187 average and just 11 runs. Tiffani Smith leads the Flames on the mound with a 1.08 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 13.0 innings of work.
UMBC vs. Liberty All-Time: The Flames lead the all-time series against the Retrievers, 11-10. The teams last met in 2010 at the Campus Suites Spartan Classic, a 5-0 victory for UMBC in which Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) tossed a four-hit shutout. UMBC and Liberty were Big South Conference rivals from 1994-98. The teams will not face off at the Retriever Classic this weekend.
On the Mountaineers: Mount St. Mary’s is 1-1 on the season following a doubleheader split with George Mason Wednesday. Four players went 2-for-6 on the day, including Taylor Beebe, who also walked once and drove in a run. Amy Sadowl earned a complete game victory for the Mount, allowing one run on four hits.
UMBC vs. Mount St. Mary’s All-Time: The Retrievers lead the all-time series against the Mountaineers, 32-3. UMBC has won four straight against the Mount, including an 8-5 victory in last season’s UMBC Spring Classic.
On the Tigers: This weekend marks the first games of the season for Princeton, which posted a 12-32 record in 2010. Sarah Rounsifer is the Tigers’ top returning hitter after batting .303 with four home runs and 19 RBI last season. Liza Kuhn won a team-best five games a year ago, posting a 5.21 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 117.0 innings on the mound.
UMBC vs. Princeton All-Time: The Tigers took the only previous meeting between UMBC and Princeton, a 3-2 decision in 1998.
On the Saints: Siena is 2-2 on the season following a season-opening North Carolina trip last weekend. Shannon Jones is batting a team-best .615 (8-for-13) so far this season, while Jessika-Jo Sandrini is hitting .600 (6-for-10) with two doubles and five RBI. Sandrini also leads the Saints in the circle with a 3.82 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 11.0 innings of work.
UMBC vs. Siena All-Time: The Retrievers lead the all-time series against the Saints, 2-0. The teams last met at the 2009 UMBC Spring Classic, a 6-3 victory for the host Retrievers.
