Emily Thompson Selected to Academic All-District Second Team

    Emily Thompson boasts a .336 batting average and a 3.65 GPA.

    BALTIMORE—UMBC senior outfielder Emily Thompson (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II University Division Second Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.

     

    Thompson has had a career year, batting .336 with 49 hits, eight home runs and 20 RBI. She has been even better against America East opponents, batting .415 with nine extra-base hits, and she ranks second in the league with 22 hits, five home runs and 42 total bases in 15 conference games. Thompson’s 17 career home runs rank 10th all-time at UMBC.

     

    Thompson excels in the classroom, as well, maintaining a 3.65 grade-point average as an interdisciplinary studies major with a focus in sports marketing. She has earned President’s List honors for a perfect 4.0 semester GPA in each of the last four semesters and has been recognized on the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice. Thompson is also a member of the UMBC Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa.

     

    Thompson is the first UMBC softball player to earn Academic All-District since former teammate Dana Shepherd in 2008.

     

    The Academic All-District II teams in the university division consists of one catcher, four infielders, three outfielders, two pitchers and one designated player from Division I schools in Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

     

    The Retrievers are 24-22 on the season and 5-10 in America East play. UMBC concludes the season this weekend with a three-game series against conference rival Albany at UMBC Softball Stadium.
