Fefel Takes Home America East Softball Player of the Week

4/26/2010

Amanda Fefel batted .538 last week to earn her second career Player of the Week award.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC senior third baseman/pitcher Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) was named America East Softball Player of the Week for the week ending April 25, the conference announced Monday.

The award is the second of Fefel’s career and first since March 16, 2009. It is the third Player of the Week nod for a Retriever this season, as junior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) earned the honor twice in earlier in the year.

Fefel batted .538 (7-for-13) and slugged .923 with two doubles, a home run, three RBI and four runs scored in three games last week, picking up multiple hits in each contest. She also pitched to a 1.97 ERA with eight strikeouts in 10.2 innings.

She went 2-for-4 with a double and scored UMBC’s first run in a 3-2 series-opening loss to America East rival Maine on Saturday, and also gave up just one earned run on four hits and struck out four in six innings of work in the circle. She then went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs in the nightcap, a 4-1 Retriever victory.

Finally, in the rubber match on Sunday, Fefel had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three. The homer was her team-best 10th of the season and the 40th of her career, tying UMBC’s all-time record, and it gave UMBC a 2-0 first-inning lead. She also struck out four in 4.2 innings of relief in the contest.

Fefel is batting a team-best .336 on the season, and she leads the Retrievers with 10 home runs and 31 RBIs.

The Retrievers return to action this weekend when they travel to America East rival Hartford for a three-game series.
