  • Box Score

Lauren Brummell hit two doubles against Coppin State on Wednesday.

BALTIMOREUMBC pitchers Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) combined on the Retrievers’ third one-hit shutout in their last seven games, as they blanked cross-town rival Coppin State, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium. UMBC improves to 20-17 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 16-14.

Fefel retired all nine batters she faced over the first three innings and struck out four before giving way to Weigman, who also fanned four batters in the final four frames while allowing only an infield single in the sixth to earn the victory.

Junior designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) drove in the first run of the game with a one-out single in the first, and junior first baseman Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State) followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Retrievers the early 2-0 lead.

The score stood until the fifth inning, when junior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) belted her second double of the game to set the stage for Fefel’s eighth home run of the season to make it 4-0.

Tiffani Whaley suffered the loss for Coppin State. She allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out three in six innings of work.

The Retrievers return to action this weekend, when they host defending America East champion Boston University in a three-game series. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.

Notes: It was the second time the Retrievers have one-hit the Eagles in the last week, as they won a 2-0 decision last Wednesday behind Weigman’s 15-strikeout performance… Fefel’s home run was the 38th of her career, leaving her two behind Kristie Pickeral’s UMBC record.
