Stephanie Weigman tossed a one-hitter and struck out a career-high 15 batters against Coppin State.

BALTIMOREUMBC junior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high 15 batters as the UMBC softball team (18-14) defeated cross-town rival Coppin State (15-11) by a score of 2-0 Wednesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.

It was the second shutout in as many days for the Retrievers, who also blanked Georgetown by an identical 2-0 score behind senior Amanda Fefel’s (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) one-hitter on Tuesday. It is the first time UMBC has recorded back-to-back shutouts since blanking Hartford in both games of a doubleheader on March 30, 2008.

Weigman (9-7) struck out the first six batters she faced before walking center fielder Patrice Williams to lead off the third inning. She did not allow a hit until the fifth, when first baseman Jade Dudley doubled down the left field line with two outs.

Paige Arnold (14-6) also pitched well in the loss for Coppin State. She went the distance and allowed two runs on five hits without walking a batter.

UMBC got on the board in the second when sophomore left fielder Kaela Mason (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech) led off the inning with her second home run of the season, and senior catcher Amanda Page (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Monroe CC) gave the Retrievers a 2-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the fourth.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday afternoon, when they host Longwood in a doubleheader.
