Amanda Fefel tossed her sixth career shutout with a one-hitter against Georgetown.

BALTIMORE—UMBC senior Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) allowed just one hit and struck out a season-high seven batters as the UMBC softball team (17-14) blanked Georgetown (14-18) by a score of 2-0 Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium.

Fefel went the distance and improved to 3-2 on the season with the first shutout by a Retriever pitcher since junior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) blanked Liberty, 5-0, on Feb. 20. It was Fefel’s sixth career shutout and her first since April 2, 2009, against Morgan State.

Mackensey Carter (6-10) also pitched well in the loss for Georgetown. She gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five in five innings.

After allowing a two-out hit to Carter in the first, Fefel retired nine in a row before surrendering a walk to catcher Shikara Lowe with two outs in the fourth inning, and she struck out five of the first nine batters she faced.

The Retrievers had a runner on base in each of the first three innings, but could not crack the scoreboard until the fourth, while junior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) and junior designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) led off with back-to-back singles and scored on a two-out single by senior catcher Amanda Page (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Monroe CC).

Those two runs proved to be all UMBC needed, as Fefel allowed just two base runners over the final three innings.

O’Malley and Page paced the Retrievers at the plate, combining for five of UMBC’s seven hits in the game.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, when they host cross-town rival Coppin State at 3 p.m.
