Lauren Brummell hit a two-run home run against Binghamton.

VESTAL, N.Y.—The UMBC softball team (16-14, 1-5 AE) fell to America East rival Binghamton (15-8, 3-3 AE) by a score of 7-5 in the series finale between the two teams at the Bearcats’ East Gym Field.

The Retrievers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on doubles by senior third baseman Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and junior designated player Lauren O’Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding).

But the Bearcats took control of the game with three runs in the first and three more in the second, with the big blows coming on a two-run double by right fielder Kelly Schuldt and a two-run home run by catcher Deannie Plemon that gave the hosts a 6-1 lead.

UMBC attempted a comeback, as senior right fielder Emily Thompson (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) and junior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) each hit two-run homers in the third and fifth, respectively, to make it 6-5, but Binghamton got an insurance run in the bottom of  the fifth for the 7-5 final.

UMBC junior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) suffered the loss to fall to 8-7 on the year. She allowed six runs on six hits in 1.2 innings. Fefel gave up one run on three hits in 4.1 innings of relief. Kristen Emerling earned the win in relief for the Bearcats after pitching 2.2 scoreless frames.

The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, when they host Georgetown at 2 p.m.
