  • BOX SCORE: Saint Joseph's 3, UMBC 2
  • BOX SCORE: UMBC 8, Mount St. Mary's 5

Kaela Mason had three hits and two RBI on Sunday.

BALTIMORE—Sophomore third baseman Angela Yannone’s (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) two-out bases loaded double in the sixth inning keyed a seven-run rally that propelled the UMBC softball team (13-6) to an 8-5 victory over Mount St. Mary’s (12-10) in the final game of the UMBC Spring Classic. Earlier in the day, the Retrievers dropped a 3-2 decision to Saint Joseph’s (12-8).

    Saint Joseph’s 3, UMBC 2

Junior hurler Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) allowed just one hit through the first three innings before allowing two runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth, as the Hawks took a 3-0 lead.

The Retrievers could not crack the scoreboard until the seventh, when senior catcher Amanda Page (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Monroe CC) and sophomore pinch hitter Kaela Mason (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech) each drove in runs with two outs to cut the deficit to 3-2, but a close play at second base on a grounder ended the game.

Weigman allowed three runs in seven innings in the loss, while Erin Gallagher blanked the Retrievers over five two-hit innings to earn the victory. Taryn Ashway allowed two unearned runs on two hits over the final two innings for the Hawks.

    UMBC 8, Mount St. Mary’s 5

Trailing 5-1 in the sixth inning, junior designated player Lauren O’Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) reached on an error to lead off the inning. Mount St. Mary’s pitchers Amanda Sadowl and Amanda Hanson combined to walk the next four batters, forcing in two runs to make it 5-3, and junior first baseman Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State) drove in another with an RBI groundout. Mason walked and junior center fielder Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee) grounded into a fielder’s choice, setting the stage for Yannone’s big hit. The Retrievers scored the seventh run of the inning when freshman pinch runner Shari Beavers (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) scored on an error after a single by O’Malley.

Mount St. Mary’s loaded the bases in the seventh, but senior Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) escaped the jam by inducing a pop-up and a groundout to preserve the Retrievers’ come-from-behind victory.

Mount St. Mary’s second baseman Lisa Curreri hit a two-run homer in the third to put the visitors on the board. UMBC got one back in the bottom of the inning on Mason’s RBI double, but the Mount scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.

Fefel allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings to earn the victory in relief. Freshman Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) pitched the first five innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits. Hanson suffered the loss after allowing three unearned runs in one inning of work. Sadowl gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and seven walks in five innings.
