George Washington Visits UMBC for Thursday Doubleheader; Softball Hosts UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament This Weekend with Adjusted Schedule

    BALTIMORE—The UMBC softball team (9-1) continues its busy week with six home games scheduled for the next four days. The Retrievers will take on George Washington in a doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m. before hosting the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament this weekend. Bucknell, Drexel, Morgan State, Seton Hall and St. Francis (Pa.) will also compete. The full schedule, which has been adjusted to do rain in Friday's forecast, is below:

    Last Time Out: The Retrievers ran their winning streak to nine in a row with a doubleheader sweep of Delaware on Tuesday. UMBC took the first game, 6-5, in nine innings, before winning a five-inning, darkness-shortened contest, 4-2. Junior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) went 3-for-6 with a solo home run in the first game, while junior first baseman Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State) and senior catcher Amanda Page (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Monroe CC) each had a pair of hits. Senior designated player Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) was the only Retriever with multiple hits in the nightcap, as she went 2-for-3.

     

    Dawg Bites: UMBC is batting .280 as a team, led by Brummell (.419) and Weller (.412)… Fefel has a team-best nine RBI… She and Brummell have each blasted a pair of home runs… Brummell is slugging a team-high .806, as six of her 13 hits have gone for extra bases… She has also scored 12 runs to lead the Retrievers… Fefel ranks second all-time at UMBC with 32 career home runs, just eight shy of Kristie Pickeral’s school record… Junior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and freshman Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) have each won four games for the Retrievers… Weigman has posted a 1.94 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 36 innings, while Brown stands at 2.10 with 20 whiffs in 23 frames… Brown is the reigning America East Rookie of the Week… Weigman ranks third all-time with 40 career victories… She is also UMBC’s record holder with 468 career strikeouts… Fefel has earned four saves this season, already a school single-season record, and she also owns the Retrievers’ career record with eight saves… Head coach Joe French picked up his 500th career victory on Tuesday at Delaware.

     

    On the Colonials: George Washington is 2-5 on the season after splitting four games at the 2010 Colonial Classic last weekend, beating Army and Binghamton. Infielder Julie Orlandi leads the team in batting with a .286 average and two RBIs on the season. Heidi Penna and Kara Clauss have shared the work on the mound, each pitching more than 22 innings and posting ERAs over 5.00. The Colonials have been outscored, 46-7, through seven games this season.

     

    UMBC vs. George Washington All-Time: The Colonials lead the all-time series, 4-3, including a doubleheader sweep last season in Washington, D.C. GW won a pitchers’ duel in game one, as Weigman and Colonial starter Amanda Gabriel combined for 16 strikeouts in a 2-0 George Washington victory. The nightcap proved to be a slugfest, which the hosts won, 10-7. Weller paced the Retrievers on the day, going 4-for-7 with four RBIs.

     

    On the Bison: Bucknell is 2-2 on the year after splitting four games at last weekend’s George Mason Invitational, defeating Marist and the host Patriots. Utility player Sherry Finkel leads the Bison with a .500 average, while third baseman/catcher Mary Pavlovich is batting .444 with a team-best five RBIs. The reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Bridget Gates is 2-0 on the mound and has not allowed an earned run through 12 innings of work.

     

    UMBC vs. Bucknell All-Time: UMBC leads the series in this matchup, 10-4, including a doubleheader sweep last season. The Retrievers won the first game, 9-1, and were led by shortstop Jessica Vetock (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame/CCBC-Catonsville), who went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. UMBC took the nightcap, 6-3. Weigman picked up the victory in both games, combining to fan 19 batters in 11.1 innings.

     

    On the Bears: Morgan State is 4-6 on the season after dropping all four games at the UMBC Retriever Classic last weekend. Catcher Tamra Griffin leads Morgan State with a .500 average and seven RBIs, while infielder Jaclyn Hall is batting .400. Infielder Kriston Gowan also has seven RBIs while batting .312. Megan Johnson boasts a 2.40 ERA with 14 strikeouts to go along with a 2-1 record.

     

    UMBC vs. Morgan State All-Time: UMBC leads the all-time series, 21-1, with seven straight victories, including a 10-2 win on March 6 at the UMBC Retriever Classic. Brummell, Vetock, junior left fielder Lynn Pronobis (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) and sophomore first baseman Kaela Mason (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech) all had two hits, while Fefel drove in three with a bomb to left field. Brown struck out seven in four innings to earn the victory, while Fefel picked up the save.

     

    On the Pirates: Seton Hall is 3-9 on the year after falling twice to Towson on Wednesday. Infielder Brittany Hammer boasts a .462 batting average, while outfielder Nalin Bennett is hitting .389 with a team-best seven runs scored. In addition, catcher Kristen Kaelin leads the Pirates with 10 RBIs and four extra-base hits. Seton Hall has been outscored, 91-41, on the season. Katie Sitwell leads the Pirates with a 4.36 ERA. She and Ashley Forsyth have each struck out 19 batters; Forsyth has earned the decision in two of Seton Hall’s three victories.

     

    UMBC vs. Seton Hall All-Time: UMBC leads the all-time series with the Pirates, 3-1, after the teams split a pair of games last season. The Retrievers won the first game, 3-0, as Weigman fanned 11 batters in a dazzling complete-game effort, while Krista Kearns drove in two runs and was 2-for-3. Seton Hall won the second game, 6-1, behind a strong performance by Forsyth.

     

    On the Red Flash: St. Francis (Pa.) is 3-9 on the season with five straight losses at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla., last weekend. Second baseman Stephanie Griffin is batting a team-best .458, while catcher Raquel Rugani leads the Red Flash with three home runs and six RBIs. Megan Layne has all three wins for St. Francis, boasting a 3.29 ERA in 63 innings of work.

     

    UMBC vs. St. Francis (Pa.) All-Time: UMBC leads the all-times series, 25-8, with seven wins in the last eight meetings. Last season, the Retrievers defeated the Red Flash, 4-3, behind 12 strikeouts from Weigman and a 2-for-3, 2-RBI effort by designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding).
