Heather Brown Tabbed America East Softball Rookie of the Week; Weller Named MVP of UMBC Retriever Classic

Heather Brown contributed both at the plate and on the mound en route to her first Rookie of the Week award.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC freshman pitcher Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md/Northeast) was named America East Softball Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 7, the conference announced on Monday.

 

Brown picked up a pair of wins in as many appearances to help lead the Retrievers to the UMBC Retriever Classic title last weekend, posting a 1.56 ERA and striking out 11 against just three walks in nine innings of work. She allowed just one unearned run on three hits and struck out a career-high seven batters against Morgan State on Saturday, then fanned four in five innings while allowing two runs against Brown on Sunday. She also helped her own caused against the Bears, belting a solo home run for her first career hit.

 

Brown is 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 18.1 innings so far this season.

 

Weller Named MVP: Also on Monday, junior first baseman Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State) was named MVP of this weekend’s UMBC Retriever Classic, while six other Retrievers were selected to the all-tournament team.

 

Weller batted .417 (5-for-12) with three doubles, four RBI and four runs scored, leading UMBC to the tournament title with a perfect 4-0 record.

 

Joining Weller on the all-tournament team are Brown, junior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover), senior third baseman/pitcher Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville), senior shortstop Jessica Vetock (Pasadena, Md./Institute of Notre Dame/CCBC-Catonsville) and junior pitcher Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding.

 

Brummell hit .364 (4-for-11) with two triples, three RBI and four runs scored. Her second three-bagger plated two big runs in a 6-5 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday.

 

Fefel contributed both at the plate and in the circle this weekend, as she batted .308 (4-for-13) with a big three-run homer against Morgan State and finished with four RBI and four runs scored. She also notched three saves and allowed just one earned run while striking out six in 5.1 innings of work.

 

Vetock batted .333 (3-for-9) with an RBI and scored three runs. She also walked twice for a .455 on-base percentage. Weigman won twice and posted a 2.76 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 12.2 innings while holding opponents to a .170 batting average.

 

The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Delaware for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
