Softball to Host UMBC Retriever Classic This Weekend

    BALTIMORE—The UMBC softball team (3-1) will host the UMBC Retriever Classic this weekend at UMBC Softball Stadium. Brown (0-0), Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2) and Morgan State (4-2) will also compete. Full schedule follows below:

     

    Saturday, March 6

    9 a.m. Brown vs. Morgan State

    11 a.m. UMBC vs. Morgan State

    1 p.m. Brown vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

    3 p.m. UMBC vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

     

    Sunday, March 7

    9 a.m. Morgan State vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

    11 a.m. UMBC vs. Brown

    1 p.m. Championship Game

    3 p.m. Consolation Game

     

    Dawg Bites: The Retrievers have not played since the taking the tournament title at the season-opening Campus Suites Spartan Classic Feb. 19-21. Junior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) was named the tournament MVP after batting .455 with five runs scored, while junior first baseman Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State) also started strong with a .462 average. Senior third baseman Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) led the Retrievers with five RBI. Junior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) posted a 2-1 record and a 1.29 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 16.1 innings of work.

     

    On the Brown Bears: This weekend marks the first games of the season for Brown. The Bears finished the 2009 season with an 8-26 record. Utility player Kate Strobel led Brown with a .351 average and five home runs a year ago.

     

    UMBC vs. Brown All-Time: UMBC leads the all-time series with the Bears, 5-1. The teams have not met since 2006, when the Retrievers took three of four games.

     

    On the Knights: Fairleigh Dickinson went 2-2 at the season-opening Norfolk State Spartan Classic last weekend, defeating Norfolk State and Rider, but falling to Iona twice. Pitcher Caitlin Bradac picked up both victories, posting a 2.83 ERA, and also led the Knights at the plate with a .455 average.

     

    UMBC vs. FDU All-Time: UMBC holds a 7-0 all-time series advantage over the Knights. The teams last met in 2009, a 10-2 victory for the Retrievers at the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament. It was the first meeting between the two squads since they were Northeast Conference rivals from 2001-03. Amanda Fefel and Julia Culotta combined to go 5-for-7 with a pair of homers and five RBI in the game.

     

    On the Morgan State Bears: Morgan State is 4-2 on the season after a pair of wins over N.C. Central on Feb. 21. Catcher Tamra Griffin leads the Bears with a .500 average and a .929 slugging percentage, while Megan Johnson has posted a 2-1 record and a team-best 2.40 ERA.

     

    UMBC vs. Morgan State All-Time: UMBC holds a 20-1 all-time series advantage over the cross-town rival Bears with six straight victories. The teams last met in a doubleheader last season, which the Retrievers swept, 2-0 and 6-1. Fefel pitched a one-hit shutout and also went 2-for-3 with a home run in the first game; Stephanie Weigman also tossed a one-hitter, while Lauren O’Malley went 2-for-3 with a homer and five RBI in the nightcap. The series dates back to 1992.
