SPARTANBURG, S.C.—UMBC junior Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) allowed just two hits and struck out eight, but the UMBC softball team (0-1) dropped its season opener to host USC Upstate (2-1) by a score of 3-1 on the first day of the Campus Suites Spartan Classic.

The Spartans scored first with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Retrievers tied it in the fourth on an RBI double by senior catcher Amanda Page (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Monroe CC).

Some control issues for Weigman led to a pair of Upstate runs in the fifth, as she hit two batters before catcher Ericka Harris doubled in both runners with the game-winning runs.

Morgan Childers (2-0) went the distance, limiting the Retrievers to just two hits and striking out 16 batters in the win.

The Retrievers return to action on Saturday for the second day of the Campus Suites Spartan Classic, when they will take on Eastern Kentucky at 1 p.m. and Liberty at 3 p.m.
