CENTERVILLE, Mass.UMBC junior designated player Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and sophomore second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) were named to the 2009 ECAC Division I Softball All-Star Team, the organization announced Tuesday. They are the first Retrievers to earn ECAC honors since Kristie Pickeral and Lauren Hebb in 2003.

An America East All-Conference First Team selection, Fefel batted a team-best .381 with 61 hits, 10 doubles, 10 home runs and a conference-high 44 RBI. She slugged .644 with 103 total bases, and she reached base at a 45.1 percent clip. The Retrievers’ best clutch hitter, she batted .491 with runners in scoring position. Fefel also pitched to an 11-4 record with a 3.29 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 100.0 innings of work this season. Last month, she was named team co-MVP, as well as UMBC’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete of 2009 at the athletic department’s annual varsity awards banquet.

Brummell earned All-Conference Second Team honors after batting .368 with a team-high 63 hits and 34 runs scored, as well as a UMBC single-season record 20 doubles, which led the league and ranked third in the NCAA. The Retrievers’ leadoff hitter, she reached base at a 41.8 percent clip, second only to Fefel. Brummell was even better against America East opponents, batting .385 and slugging .646 with 11 extra-base hits. She was also named team co-MVP last month and was tabbed to the America East All-Championship Team, as well.

Fefel and Brummell played integral roles in leading the Retrievers to their fourth straight America East Championship appearance. UMBC finished the season 34-21 and led the conference in runs scored (265), doubles (83) and home runs (46).
