STONY BROOK, N.Y.The fourth-seeded UMBC softball team (34-20) lost to No. 1 Stony Brook (36-12) by a score of 3-1 on the first day of the America East Championships at the Seawolves’ University Field.

Sophomore hurler Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) went the distance and allowed just one earned run on four hits but fell to 22-15 on the season. Alyssa Struzenberg picked up the victory to improve to 22-5. She did not allow a run on three hits and three walks in five innings of work. Casey Jacobs earned her fifth save of the season after allowing one unearned run in the final two innings.

Stony Brook jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when shortstop Vicki Kavitsky led off the game with a dribbler in front of the plate which she beat out for a single and scored two batters later when first baseman Marissa Fleury’s single to left took an odd bounce in the soggy grass, allowing Kavitsky to score from first.

With two outs in the bottom of the third, left fielder Crista Cerrone reached on an error and came around to score on a second overthrow. Center fielder Kelsi Fanelli followed with a solo home run over the center field fence to give the Seawolves a 3-0 lead.

Left fielder Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State) reached on an error to lead off the seventh and scored the Retrievers’ only run of the game three batters later on a groundout by third baseman Krista Kearns (Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe).

With the second game of the day between No. 2 Boston University and No. 3 Albany postponed due to rain, the Retrievers must wait until Friday to learn their opponent. They will face the loser of that contest in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Follow along with live updates of the UMBC Dawg Blog.
