Fefel, Brummell Earn All-Conference Honors; Mason, Bernheimer Tabbed to All-Rookie Team

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC junior utility player Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) earned America East All-Conference First Team honors for the third straight season, while sophomore second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) was selected to the Second Team, the league announced Monday. In addition, freshman first baseman Kaela Mason (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech) and freshman catcher Rebecca Bernheimer (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) were tabbed to the All-Rookie Team. All awards were voted on by the league’s eight head coaches.

     

    Fefel is batting a team-best .387 with 60 hits, 10 doubles, 10 home runs and a conference-high 44 RBI. She is slugging .658 with 102 total bases, and she has reached base at a 45.5 percent clip. Fefel has also pitched to an 11-4 record with a 3.25 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 99.0 innings of work this season. Earlier in the week, she was named co-team MVP, as well as UMBC’s Most Outstanding Female Athlete of 2009 at the athletic department’s annual varsity awards banquet.

     

    An All-Rookie Team selection last season, Brummell raised her average .100 points in 2009, batting .367 with a team-high 61 hits and 34 runs scored, as well as a UMBC single-season record 20 doubles. The Retrievers’ leadoff hitter, she has reached base at a 41.5 percent clip, second only to Fefel. Brummell is even better against America East opponents, batting .385 and slugging .646 with 11 extra-base hits. She was also named co-team MVP earlier in the week.

     

    Mason is batting .255 with nine RBI in 51 at-bats. She earned an America East Rookie of the Week award on March 30. Bernheimer is batting .269 with two doubles in 26 at-bats. She has not made an error in 100 chances behind the plate.

     

    Albany third baseman Megan Butsch and Maine outfielder Alexis Souhlaris shared Player of the Year honors, while Albany’s Leah McIntosh was tabbed Pitcher of the Year. Boston University second baseman Emily Roesch was named Rookie of the Year and Stony Brook’s Megan Bryant earned Coach of the Year.

     

    The fourth-seeded Retrievers, who advanced to their fourth straight America East Championships with a two-game sweep of Hartford last weekend, open the double elimination tournament against defending America East champion and top-seeded Stony Brook on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Seawolves’ University Field.
