Retrievers Drop Pitchers’ Duel to Georgetown, 2-1

    Stephanie Weigman gave up two runs on four hits and struck out nine in the loss.

    WASHINGTON, D.C.Right fielder Alison Duff (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport/Monroe CC) hit her fourth home run of the season and Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) struck out nine, but the UMBC softball team (27-17) dropped a pitchers’ duel to Georgetown (11-25) by a score of 2-1 Thursday afternoon at Guy Mason Field.

     

    All of the scoring occurred in the fifth inning. Duff led off with a solo homer to center field, giving the Retrievers a 1-0 lead. But in the bottom of the frame, the Hoyas loaded the bases with one out for right fielder Kristi Preuss, who singled up the middle to tie the game. Shortstop Samantha Peters followed with a sacrifice ply to put Georgetown on top, 2-1.

     

    Weigman (17-12) suffered the hard-luck loss after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine in the complete game. Jennifer Connell also went the distance for the Hoyas, giving up one run on two hits and five walks in the victory.

     

    The Retrievers return to action this weekend when they host America East rival Vermont in a three-game series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
