Fefel, Weigman Headline UMBC Spring Classic All-Tournament Team

Stephanie Weigman struck out 31 batters in 20.0 innings of work over the weekend.

Amanda Fefel batted .563 in five games at the UMBC Spring Classic.

BALTIMOREUMBC junior first baseman Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) was named Co-Most Outstanding Hitter, and sophomore hurler Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was named Co-Most Outstanding Pitcher for last weekend’s UMBC Spring Classic, UMBC head coach Joe French announced Monday.

 

Sophomore second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover), sophomore center fielder Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee), senior outfielder Krista Kearns (Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe) and sophomore designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) were also selected to the All-Tournament Team.

 

Fefel batted .563 (9-for-16) with a double, a home run and four runs scored in five games. She slugged .813 and reached base at a .611 clip. Fefel shared Most Outstanding Hitter honors with Niagara’s Kayla Hines.

 

Weigman went 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 20.0 innings of work, holding opponents to a .240 batting average. She pitched two complete games and also picked up her first career save. Weigman shared Most Outstanding Pitcher honors with Niagara’s Michelle Krier.

 

Brummell hit .316 (6-for-19) with a double and four runs scored. Culotta batted .429 (6-for-14) with four doubles and five RBI. Kearns hit .357 (5-for-14) with a double, a homer and five RBI. O’Malley batted .500 (7-for-14) with a double, a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.

 

Niagara went 5-0 on the weekend to win the UMBC Spring Classic, while the Retrievers placed second with a 4-1 record.
