Softball Places Second at UMBC Spring Classic After 5-3 Victory Over Binghamton

    BALTIMOREThe UMBC softball team (17-9) picked up another come-from-behind victory Sunday afternoon, defeating Binghamton (2-10) by a score of 5-3 to place second at the UMBC Spring Classic. The Retrievers have now won 16 of their last 19 games.

     

    The Retrievers scored twice in the second on a two-out single by left fielder Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State), but the Bearcats took a 3-2 lead in the third on five straight singles.

     

    Weller tied the game in the fourth with another two-out single, and designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) put UMBC back on top, 4-3, with her first home run of the season in the fifth. The Retrievers then added an insurance run in the sixth.

     

    “We showed the ability to come back all weekend, which will be a good thing going into conference play because we’ll know we’re never out of it,” head coach Joe French said.

     

    Sophomore Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) shut the Bearcats down with four scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory and improve to 10-7 on the season. She struck out eight of the 13 batters she faced and allowed just one base runner, a single in the fourth. Sophomore Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee) allowed three runs and struck out four in the first three innings. Nicole Constantatos suffered the loss for Binghamton after allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits in the complete game.

     

    Weller, O’Malley, first baseman Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) and shortstop Ashleigh Robinson (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) all had two hits for the Retrievers. Weller drove in three runs, while Robinson scored three times.

     

    In other action on the final day of the UMBC Spring Classic, Niagara defeated Siena, 6-4, and Binghamton, 8-1, and Robert Morris beat St. Francis, 8-0, and Binghamton, 4-3.

     

    Niagara won the Seventh Annual UMBC Spring Classic with a perfect 5-0 record on the weekend. UMBC (4-1) placed second, followed by Robert Morris (3-2), St. Francis (2-3), Siena (1-4) and Binghamton (0-5).

     

    The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, March 24, when they host cross-town rival Towson in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
