Fefel, Weigman Named America East Player and Pitcher of the Week; Seven Retrievers Tabbed to UMBC Retriever Classic All-Tournament Team

Amanda Fefel batted .588 with five extra-base hits in six games last week.

Stephanie Weigman went 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA and 26 strikeouts last week.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.UMBC junior Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) was named America East Player of the Week, while sophomore Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was tabbed Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 15, the conference announced Monday.

 

Fefel led the Retrievers to a perfect 6-0 week and earned MVP honors at last weekend’s UMBC Retriever Classic with a team-best .588 batting average (10-for-17) with five extra-base hits, including three doubles, a triple and a home run for 18 total bases and a 1.059 slugging percentage. She also posted six RBI, six runs scored and four walks for a .682 on-base percentage. Fefel also went 3-0 on the mound and held opponents to a .211 average with 13 strikeouts in 15 innings of work, including a complete game against Hampton on Saturday.

 

The Most Outstanding Pitcher at the UMBC Retriever Classic, Weigman went 3-0 on the week and allowed just five runs in 23 innings of work for a 1.52 ERA. She pitched three complete games and held opponents to a .235 average. Weigman also struck out 26 batters while walking just six. Her top performance of the week came in a 5-1 win over Marist on Sunday, when she allowed just one run on two hits with nine strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

 

Fefel and Weigman were joined on the UMBC Retriever Classic All-Tournament Team by sophomore first baseman Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State), sophomore center fielder Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee), sophomore second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover), senior right fielder Krista Kearns (Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe) and junior catcher Amanda Page (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Monroe CC).

 

Fefel batted .636 (7-for-11) and slugged 1.273 with 14 total bases in four games, while going 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 10.0 innings of work. Weigman also went 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 14 innings.

 

Weller batted .500 (6-for-12) and slugged .833 and scored five times while reaching base at a .733 clip. Culotta hit .364 (4-for-11) with two RBI and three runs, while Brummell hit .308 (4-for-13) with two doubles, a triple, four runs and two steals. Kearns batted .300 (3-for-10) with three RBI and two runs, and Page hit .273 (3-for-11) with a double and three RBI.

 

The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, March 17, when they host in-state rival Mount St. Mary’s in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
