3/15/2009

  • BOX SCORE: UMBC 5, Marist 1
  • BOX SCORE: UMBC 14, Hampton 2 (5 innings)

Lauren O'Malley drove in three runs with a pair of doubles.

BALTIMORE—The UMBC softball team (11-8) completed a perfect 4-0 weekend with victories over Marist and Hampton on the second day of the UMBC Softball Classic Sunday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers defeated the Red Foxes, 5-1, and Hampton, 14-2, in five innings.

    Game 1: UMBC 5, Marist 1

The Red Foxes scored a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by catcher Megan Lamoureux, but UMBC starter Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) retired 11 straight after a rocky first inning.

The Retrievers took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second on doubles catcher Amanda Page (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia/Monroe CC) and left fielder Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State), then added a run in the third on an RBI single by Page and another in the sixth on a wild pitch.

Weigman struck out nine batters in the two-hitter to even her record at 6-6 on the season. Caitlin Carpentier suffered the loss for Marist, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out five in the complete game.

Page paced UMBC’s offense with a 2-for-3 effort, two RBI and a run. Four of the Retrievers’ eight hits went for two bases.

    Game 2: UMBC 14, Hampton 2 (5 innings)

The Retrievers scored 14 runs on nine hits in five innings of the second game, capitalizing on six Pirate errors.

UMBC scored twice in the first on an RBI single by left fielder Krista Kearns (Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe) and an error. The Retrievers jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a four-run second by virtue of four straight walks and just one hit. That one hit was a big one, however – a three-run double by designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding).

Hampton got two back in the top of the fourth on a home run by second baseman Shardé Estep, but an eight-run bottom of the inning gave the Retrievers the 14-2 victory.

Kearns got the scoring started with an RBI double. Four batters later, third baseman Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) plated two with a single, and a third runner scored on an error on the play. With two on, second baseman Ashleigh Robinson (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) hit an inside-the-park home run to make it 13-2, and pitcher Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) tripled and came across on an error to complete UMBC’s scoring.

Fefel (4-1) allowed two runs on three hits in four innings to earn the victory, and Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee) pitched a perfect fifth. Amanda Black suffered the loss for Hampton after giving up 14 runs (seven earned) on nine hits and nine walks in four innings of work.

Fefel and Kearns paced the Retrievers’ offense with two hits apiece. Fefel scored three times, while Kearns drove in two runs and scored once. O’Malley and Robinson each had three RBI.

The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, March 17, when they host in-state rival Mount St. Mary’s in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
