Weigman, Retrievers Shut out Seton Hall, 3-0

3/7/2009

  • Box Score

Stephanie Weigman has struck out 23 batters in her last two games.

BALITMORE—Sophomore hurler Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) struck out 11 in a two-hit shutout to lead the UMBC softball team (5-6) past Seton Hall (5-8) by a score of 3-0 Sunday afternoon one the second day of the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament.

A three-run first inning for the Retrievers turned out to be the difference in the game. Second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by designated player Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville). UMBC loaded the bases with no outs, and right fielder Krista Kearns (Santa Fe Springs, Calif./Santa Fe) plated a pair with a single.

Seton Hall starter Danielle Zanzalari (0-1) settled down after that, retiring the side in order three times, including the final two innings. She allowed seven hits and did not walk a batter in the complete game loss.

But Weigman (3-5) was even better, never allowing a runner past second base and never allowing more than one runner in an inning.

Kearns went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI to pace the Retrievers’ offense. First baseman Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also had a pair of hits for UMBC.

“Any time you beat a major conference school, it’s a huge win,” UMBC head coach Joe French said. “Stephanie Weigman was masterful today, and Krista and O’Malley came up with some big hits again.”

The Retrievers take on Drexel Sunday at 11 a.m. Seton Hall is finished pool play and has advanced to the championship game and will take on either UMBC or Drexel. The other team will play the winner of Sunday morning’s Marist/Farileigh Dickinson contest.
