Softball to Host Fifth Annual UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament This Weekend

BALTIMOREThe UMBC softball team (2-6) will host the Fifth Annual UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament this weekend. Drexel (1-4), Fairleigh Dickinson (0-0), Marist (1-5) and Seton Hall (2-7) will also compete. Full schedule follows below:

 

Friday, March 6 – Pool Play

9 a.m. Seton Hall vs. Drexel

11 a.m. Seton Hall vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

1 p.m. UMBC vs. Fairleigh Dickinson

3 p.m. UMBC vs. Marist

 

Saturday, March 7 – Pool Play

9 a.m. Drexel vs. Marist

11 a.m. Fairleigh Dickinson vs. Drexel

1 p.m. Marist vs. Seton Hall

3 p.m. UMBC vs. Seton Hall

 

Sunday, March 8 – Pool Play/Championship Bracket Play

Dawg Bites: In her first games in a UMBC uniform, sophomore first baseman Malorie Weller (Round Hill, Va./Loudoun Valley/Kennesaw State) led the Retrievers in almost every offensive category over the first two weeks of the season, including hits (10), batting average (.455), runs (6), doubles (3), homers (3), RBI (9), at-bats (22), total bases (22), slugging percentage (1.000) and on-base percentage (.478)… Sophomore pitcher Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) suffered a number of hard-luck losses in the first two weeks of the season to fall to 1-5 despite strong efforts on the mound. She finished with 40 strikeouts and a 2.97 ERA in 33.0 innings of work… Weller and junior designated player Amanda Fefel (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) were both named to the season-opening Campus Suites Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team.

 

On the Dragons: Drexel went 1-4 at the season-opening Kennesaw State Classic… Paige Collings leads the Dragons with a .429 average, while Sandi Wambold has hit two home runs. Ellen Boundy has posted a team-best 5.14 ERA.

 

UMBC vs. Drexel All-Time: UMBC leads the all-time series with the Dragons, 16-6. The teams have not met since 2006 at the Delaware State Bash at the Beach, a 6-4 Retriever win.

 

On the Knights: Fairleigh Dickinson will open its season this weekend… Lindsey Glidden led the Knights with a .267 batting average last season, while top pitcher Trina Fields also returns after winning six games and striking out 90 batters in 2008.

 

UMBC vs. FDU All-Time: UMBC leads the all-time series with the Knights, 6-0. The teams have not met since they were Northeast Conference rivals in 2003.

 

On the Red Foxes: Marist went 1-5 at the season-opening Jacksonville Tournament last weekend… Jessica Green is the Red Foxes’ top offensive threat with a .533 batting average and four RBI, while Caitlin Carpentier has posted a team-best 5.00 ERA.

 

UMBC vs. Marist All-Time: This weekend marks the first-ever meeting between the Retrievers and Red Foxes.

 

On the Pirates: Seton Hall is 2-7 on the season and coming off a 1-4 weekend at the First Pitch Classic in Charlotte, N.C…. Michelle Reed is batting a team-best .357, while Kim Schweitzer has posted a 4.20 ERA on the mound.

 

UMBC vs. Seton Hall All-Time: UMBC leads the all-time series with the Pirates, 2-0, but the teams have not met since 1997, when the Retrievers swept a doubleheader at home.

 

Retrievers Tabbed Fifth in Preseason Poll: UMBC was picked to finish in a tie for fifth place in the America East Preseason Poll. The Retrievers received 23 total points to tie with Hartford. Stony Brook is predicted to defend its 2008 America East title, receiving five first-place votes and 45 total points. Boston University (two first-place votes) and Albany (one first-place vote) each received 42 points to finish tied for second, while Maine was tabbed fourth with 28 points. The top four teams advance to the America East Championships. UMBC has earned a berth in the conference tournament in each of the last three seasons.
