UMBC Softball to Celebrate 15th Anniversary of 1995 Retriever Squad
2/17/2009
BALTIMORE—The UMBC softball team will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 1995 squad that was the first in program history to win 40 games. The Retrievers will honor all team members between games on March 28.
After UMBC’s second game against
In 1995 under head coach Joy Figueredo, UMBC posted a 41-13 record, including 9-4 in the Big South, and advanced to the conference championship game. The Retrievers rewrote nearly every record in the school’s history books, and their .332 team batting average still stands as the best-ever in a season by a UMBC squad.
The team included outfielder Amy Wolff, first baseman Carrie Lycett and shortstop Nikki Tinsley, who became the first Retrievers ever to record 60 or more hits in a season. Lycett and Wolff still rank among UMBC’s all-time leaders in nearly every offensive category. Wolff and third baseman Jen Jewell both earned All-Big South First Team honors that year, and they are both members of the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame, as well.
Other team members included second baseman Melissa Scarborough, the first four-year starter in the program’s history; pitchers Stacey Matcuk and Karen Jacobson, who still rank among UMBC’s career wins leaders; and Big South All-Tournament Team member Rachel Synowski.
Since 1995, four other UMBC teams have won 40 games – 1997 (42 wins), 2002 (47 wins), 2003 (40 wins) and 2006 (46 wins).
Members of the 1995 Retriever softball squad are asked to RSVP to head coach Joe French at 410-455-1325 or jfrench@umbc.edu or assistant coach Lauren Nicholson 410-455-6356 at laun1@umbc.edu.
