Softball Inks Three for 2010

2/3/2009

BALTIMORE—UMBC head softball coach Joe French announced today that three players have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Retrievers for the 2010 season.

“All three of these recruits will help replace the pitching and power that we will lose with Krista Kearns, Alison Duff and Randi Willey,” the eighth-year coach said. “We also feel that we added versatility with this class. All three have played for great travel ball organizations at the highest level. We were also looking for the right student-athletes that would be successful here both on the field and in the classroom.

Headlining the group is Heather Brown, a pitcher/outfielder from Northeast High School in Pasadena, Md. The righty was 17-6 with a 0.92 ERA and 241 strikeouts as a junior last season and earned postseason honors from a number of local publications, including First-Team All-County and Second-Team All-Metro from The Sun. Brown played travel ball for the Maryland Legends Gold and Riveria Beach Spirit Gold

“Heather will be an impact pitcher right away, and she could also see time in the outfield or at designated player because she also carries a lethal bat,” French said.

Katie Trotter, a second baseman/utility player from Williamstown High School in Williamstown, N.J., can play anywhere on the field and can even pitch, as well. She has earned recognition on numerous postseason all-star teams after hitting .462 with 43 hits, 31 RBI and 28 runs scored as a junior and leading her team to the state title. Trotter played travel ball for the West Jersey Elite Witches Gold.

“Katie is one of the best hitters in the region,” French said. “She has power to all fields and is also a great base runner. She will provide great softball skills at whatever position she plays. We are expecting her to contribute right away.”

Finally, Ashley Scroggin is a versatile player from North Stafford High School in Stafford, Va., who plays first base and third base and can also catch. She was named to the Richmond Times-Dispatch All-State Second Team as a junior. She played travel ball for the Shamrocks 18 Gold and the Virginia Baseliners Gold teams.

“Ashley is extremely strong with tremendous power,” French said. “She can hit the ball as far as anyone when she really gets it on the sweet part of the bat. She also has an outstanding throwing arm from both third base and catcher. She is a Northern Virginia all-star who brings great skills to our program.”
