Dana Shepherd had two hits, including a home run, on her Senior Day.

BALTIMOREThe UMBC softball team (19-23, 7-7 AEC) fell to America East rival Boston University (26-15, 12-2 AEC) by a score of 4-2 Sunday afternoon at a rainy UMBC Softball Stadium. The Terriers completed the three-game series sweep after a rain delay that lasted more than an hour and a half.

After the game, the Retrievers honored seniors Ashley Gray, Carla O’Rourke, Dana Shepherd and Kali Shirk in a Senior Day ceremony.

The Terriers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when left fielder Shayne Lotito’s liner was mishandled, driving in center fielder April Setterlund, who led off the game with a double. Lotito scored one batter later on an RBI double by shortstop Melissa Dubay, but Gray and the Retrievers escaped the jam when first baseman Rachel Hebert popped out and Shirk gunned down Dubay, who was attempting to advance on the play.

Shepherd then led off the bottom of the inning with her eighth home run of the season, tying Gray for the team lead and cutting Boston’s advantage in half, 2-1.

But BU right fielder Nora Militz hit a one-out solo homer in the top of the second, and the Terriers maintained their two-run advantage until the seventh, when they tacked on an insurance run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Hebert. UMBC reliever Stephanie Weigman ended the threat by striking out third baseman Brooke Hudson.

UMBC second baseman Lauren Brummell led off the bottom of the inning with a double, which chased BU starter Cassidi Hardy. Brummell came around to score on a pair of groundouts to make it 4-2, but the Retrievers could get no closer.

Hardy (12-5) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings of work to pick up the victory, and Kelley Engman earned her second save of the season by pitching the final inning.

Gray (5-6) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out four in five innings. Weigman pitched the final two frames, giving up one unearned run without allowing a hit. She walked three and struck out two.

Shepherd and Shirk led the Retrievers’ offense with two hits apiece, while Setterlund paced the Terriers with a pair of hits.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday, when they host America East rival Binghamton at 2 p.m. in their home finale.
