Dana Shepherd with 2-for-3 with a triple and a home run against Albany.

BALTIMORE—First baseman Ashley Gray and second baseman Dana Shepherd each hit solo home runs, but the UMBC softball team (14-18, 3-1 AEC) dropped a 3-2 decision to America East rival Albany (14-10, 2-0 AEC) Sunday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed until Monday at 12 p.m., with the series finale to immediately follow.

Albany designated player Gina Mason put the Great Danes on the board first with a solo shot to lead off the top of the second inning, but Gray led off the bottom of the frame with her own round tripper that tied the score at 1-1.

Shepherd’s homer came with two outs in the bottom of the third and gave the Retrievers a short-lived 2-1 lead, as the Great Danes again tied the score the next inning on an RBI double by catcher Kat Smith. With runners on second and third, freshman Stephanie Weigman relieved starting pitcher Amanda Fefel and struck out the final two batters to escape the jam.

In her next at-bat, Smith hit a high pitch over the right-center field fence for what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth inning.

Leah McIntosh (8-3) picked up the victory for the Great Danes after allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out nine Retriever batters. Fefel was charged with two runs on five hits and two walks in the first 3.1 innings, while Weigman (8-10) gave up one run on two hits and a walk in the final 3.2 frames and suffered the loss. Both UMBC pitchers struck out four batters.

Shepherd and center fielder Lynn Pronobis led the Retrievers at the plate with a pair of 2-for-3 efforts. Shepherd added a triple to go along with her fifth home run of the season. Six of her last nine hits over a six-game span have gone for extra bases, while Gray has hit four homers and driven in 13 runs in her last eight contests.

Smith and center fielder Nicole Kothe posted two hits apiece for the Great Danes, with Smith driving in two runs and scoring once.
